Jann Rosen-Queralt is an interdisciplinary artist based in Baltimore, MD. She has 40 years of experience creating public artwork, monumental sculpture, and multi-media installations revealing the poetic nature of water and exploring social and ecological relationships while connecting them to universal themes. An avid scuba diver, underwater photographer and researcher of aquatic environments, Rosen-Queralt’s work focuses on marine creatures and scientific understanding of elements and ecosystems to trigger public action and awareness. An example of this her first book, Heart Beating Beneath the Earth, published in 2023 with funding from a Maryland State Arts Council grant. The book includes photographs of her sculptures alongside the written responses from over 2 dozen individual contributors, creating a new ecosystem of meaning. Recent research includes a grant-funded trip to study Western landscape photographs at the Center for Creative Photography in Arizona (2021) and an exploratory art and science residency aboard a research vessel in the Arctic Circle (2023), as well as independent dives. Artworks developed as a result of these trips will be exhibited in several exhibitions in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Most recently, her animation Arriving from A Great Distance, which follows the journey of a seed pod as it travels across global water currents, was displayed at the Parkway Theater as part of the 2024 Artscape festival and subsequent events. After 40 years teaching, Rosen-Queralt retired from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2021, where her most final role was Director of the Rinehart Graduate school of Sculpture. She now dedicates herself full time to her artwork. Subscribe to the newsletter to learn about future exhibitions and projects!
