Still Center - 1994

Still Center was a collaborative project with residents of Patrick Country VA. These people had long history with the land - their traditions and memories of the Blue Ridge environment served as a basis for our endeavor.

A 54’ L x 27’ W x 5” D area was excavated out of the bottomland hear the Homestead rock spring and planted with three types of ground cover. The shape makes reference to the physical terrain of mountains surrounding valleys and represents ‘bread', ie: the sustenance of life. The entire scale of the garden refers to the body as a constant measure for the articulation of the miniature and gigantic. The creek banks were cleared to reveal ferns, jack-in-pulpit, mayflowers and touch-me-not mimosa. Members of the community donated and planted wildflowers like trillium, columbine, dwarf iris, and fire pink, as well as medicinal herbs and perennials to create a woodland garden. Nestled throughout are benches made from locust logs with inscriptions taken from interviews with county residents. The members of the community carved and embellished the benches.

Overall Dimensions: 115’ x 190’ x 88’

Bench dimensions 18” x 15” x 60”
