Wondering Wandering, 1997-1999

Backlit collages of photographs I took while traveling between 1970 and 1997. Exhibited at Artscape 1982 at the Decker Gallery at Mount Royal Station, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD.

These collages are inspired by 17th century Persian miniatures detailing the official history of the Mughal Empire. The pieces are meant to evoke daydreams and memories of places I have traveled. Like the Persian miniatures, they are narratives created from the point of view of the individual recording the events and representing a sense of place. Each piece is a combination of what may appear to be disparate elements. However upon closer inspection, the collage is a memory of the experience, distinct from its origin. The intimacy of the image draws the viewer closer, but in studying the details, the works feel larger - much in the same way that a memory can be triggered by a faint sound or scent - and then swells to engulf its subject.
